How To Chose Cardio Equipment
Have you ever wondered what piece of cardio equipment to use? The answer to that question differs depending on the physical goals and abilities of the the individual. A good answer to this question is that the ideal piece equipment the one that provides the most rewards while minimizing the risks.
Whats the first thing that pops in your head when someone mentions the word workout? The first thing that comes to my mind is big heavy iron plates thrown about with ease; by huge men in shirts that look to small for them. The second thing is the treadmill! The treadmill has been used and abused for many years. It is an excellent machine to help melt the fat from your body, if you can handle the high impact jarring of your back and joints. Severely obese people and those with certain physical limitations will have an extremely tough time using this piece of equipment. A slow walk at 0% incline would probably lead to a minimum of safety and pain issues; but would also lead to minimum progress towards your goals. After all, the main goal of a cardio workout is to get your heart rate up and maintain it for a desired amount of time.
There are two ways to increase the efficiency of working on a treadmill. One is by increasing the rate of speed at which the exercise is done at. You can start by jogging or running. Jogging and running are very potent exercises when it comes to calorie burning; but both of them put a great deal stress on the knees and lower back. The unconditioned, injured and severely obese should use caution when running or jogging because it is extremely hard on the joints, bones and connective tissue. Secondly, treadmill work can be increased in intensity by increasing the percentage of grade the machine is set at. This becomes the equivalent of walking up hills or mountains outside. Incline treadmill walking is an effective calorie and fat burner but it can be problematic for people with lower back, knee or foot issues. As you can see the treadmill has its positives and negatives. Using this as your main type of cardio will depend on any limiting factors due to injuries and initial endurance levels you have.
Stationary bikes are another common piece of cardio equipmant being used at gyms today. Stationary cycling has the same pros and cons as riding a bike outside (with the exception of crashing!). I believe cycling is more beneficial than jogging and running because you can burn a lot of calories without the high impact pounding to the knees and back that you get from jogging and running. To a lesser degree however; there is some stress to the knees and back that is generated by intense cycling also.
I highly recommend elliptical machines for cardio work, due to their non-impact nature and large range of motion. You can vary the ramp, resistance and speed to target the largest lower body muscles without straining the spine or joints. It is possible to really crank up the intensity level of your training with very low risk of injury. In my opinion the elliptical machine is by far the safest and most versatile piece of cardio equipment out there. That being said; get out there and get fit!.

The tread-belt must be roomy enough for the machine to be serviceable by any one in your family. In most situations this means a minimum of 48 inches by 16 inches. Ensure that the machine at least offers 10 mph of speed along with a minimum of 10% of cushioning. Elliptical Machines and Treadmills: Which to Choose?
If you’re in the market for home exercise equipment, you may be wondering which is better: elliptical machines-or treadmills? Both types of machines offer advantages, depending on what is most important to you.
First, let’s cover the basics. Studies show that elliptical machines and treadmills offer similar cardiovascular benefits, and that both machines burn a comparable number of calories per workout. That’s good news if burning calories is your only concern.
The overall effort between the two forms of exercise may be of some concern as well. Elliptical machine users have consistently stated that working out on an elliptical machine feels much more effortless and complete.
This may be due in part to the fact that elliptical machines work the entire body. Because they engage the chest, back and arm muscles, elliptical machines require cardiovascular endurance, but without over-taxing any single muscle group. For people who don’t necessarily enjoy exercising, this greater perceived ease can be a big plus.
Another benefit of elliptical machines is the overall variety they offer over the variety offered by treadmills. With treadmills, the speed and incline changes offer some variety. Elliptical machines allow you to change settings of speed and incline as well, along with resistance settings, and forward or backward options for a wider workout variety.
This variety can help prevent overuse injuries and may actually improve the effects of your training over the long run, because your body never becomes fully accustomed to a regular “routine.”
Finally, consider the difference in the type of workout treadmills and elliptical machines provide. Although weight-bearing exercise is healthy for your bones, too much impact can be hard on your joints over time. Elliptical machines provide weight-bearing exercise, but without the potentially harmful impact.
In the long run, this could have a negative impact on your health and mobility. Elliptical machines, on the other hand, us a wide range of motion that avoids impact which keeps the joints from feeling unnecessary pressure.

Elliptical Machines: Exceptional Exercise Minus the Pain
If you want to maximize the efficiency of your workout, while taking care of your joints, the elliptical machine is the ideal choice.
These equipments embrace your feet and permit you to simulate walking or running with a fluid motion. It is the nearest that you will likely ever get to exercising without gravity.
While running, jogging, and walking provide excellent health and weight control benefits, they can also be extremely damaging to your joints. You are, essentially, choosing the improvement of cardiovascular health over joint health.
Risking your joints to high-impact exercise regularly can lead to significant injuries. Shin splints are a generally known affliction, and your cartilage might even start to diminish. Either of these might cause moderate to severe pain.
In some cases, it may become necessary to stop or severely change your exercise regimen. Routine activities may also be afflicted because of pain. A common example of an impact-related injury is when you encounter inflammation in the posterior peroneal tendon. You may note a manageable amount of pain in the beginning, but it often persists until you can no longer function as you used to.
The suspects are weight and gravity. When you do high-impact activities, these combine to put humongous pressure and stress on the joints. Walking or jogging, even on softer treadmill surfaces, can be extremely detrimental to your long-term joint health.
It becomes especially exigent to have healthy joints as we age.
With life expectancy constantly increasing well into the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, it is essential that we protect our joints so that they will perform well into later years of life.
How could you keep your body and heart healthy while safeguarding your joints?
It is conceivable to exercise to minimize the stress on your joints. Working out in water is one method to remove the effects of gravity. Elliptical machines are next best great alternative.
The same type of cardiovascular exercise accomplished through walking, jogging or using a treadmill is provided by an elliptical machine, but with much less exertion and a complete removal of joint stress.
You will also discern that using an elliptical machine feels much easier due to the fluid, natural movement it encourages. And in comparison with a treadmill, you are also working your upper body. You can get an excellent workout without damaging your body or constricting your joints.
One reason why treadmills are so popular is that they offer an incline feature, so you could continually accentuate your workouts. You may also do this using an elliptical machine. In addition, you can pedal in both forward and reverse with one of these versatile machines.
You can engage in the forward skiing motion and then reverse to tone an entirely new set of muscles. Treadmills do not afford you this aspect, and it may look a little strange jogging down a trail backwards (it’s not very safe also).
If you seek a way to get a great workout, without the pain, an elliptical machine is your best option. It provides an marvelous exercise experience that will keep your joints happy for years to come.
Are elliptical machines correct?
I was wondering if the calorie loss counters on elliptical machines are correct.
Because I work out everyday on mine at the highest resistance for 25 mins and lose 800 calories.
Somehow this doesn’t see possible.
Well if that’s true about what you said about them lieing, they should be able to get in trouble for that right?
They’re not correct. They like to exaggerate the calorie burning so you’ll use it more often, which increases demand for Elliptical machines in gyms, which makes the company more money.
Edit: I doubt anyone will get in trouble for exaggerating calories burned. I’m sure somewhere in all the paperwork you get with the machine is a very tiny paragraph that says "Calories Burned is approximate. Actual calories burned may vary."
